About me

I am a PhD Student at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), supervised by Prof. Chris Wojtan in the ISTA Visual Computing Group. My current research topics include rigid body dynamics and granular simulations.

Before coming to ISTA, I obtained a masters in computer science at ETH Zürich under the supervision of Vinicius da Costa de Azevedo, Barbara Solenthaler, and Markus Gross, and a bachelor of science in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Taiwan University.

Pedantic trivia about the name

As a bit of trivia, personal names are the characters themselves per Chinese conventions, and the pronunciation can differ depending on which Sinitic language you speak (sometimes referred to as dialects, though in terms of mutual intelligibility they really are languages :P). While these days it is common to assume every pronunciation comes from Mandarin, these language differences find their way into common transliterations that would otherwise make little sense in Mandarin, such as Switzerland(瑞士, Ruìshì), Sweden(瑞典, Ruìdiǎn), New York (紐約, Niǔyuē), Holmes (as in Sherlock Holmes, 福爾摩斯, Fú'ěrmósī), and John/Johann(約翰, Yuēhàn).

As mandated by Taiwanese public transport, Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Hakka transcriptions of my name are provided on the bottom of the banner above, in Bopomofo, POJ/KIP, and THRS, respectively. Yi-Lu Chen, which I use professionally, is based on the Mandarin pronunciation.

Despite my collegues' and Google's insistance to the contrary, I am not Yi-Chen Lu, Chen-Yi Lu, Yuli Chen, Liyu Chen, Peter Yichen Chen, Yilu Chen, or Yilu Chen, and am most likely not as cool. I am also not a style of Taichi.
